Event Details

Located in the gorgeous location of a large private country house in the middle of the Kent countryside, the course is mainly designed for keen amateurs with DSLR digital cameras or those that have recently acquired one and want to learn how to use them. There’s some theory but the emphasis is on practical learning, interaction and asking lots of questions. The afternoon session includes a model in order to practice aspects of portraiture.

  • camera controls - what they all do
  • exposure – shutter speed, aperture
  • the nature and behaviour of light (reflected vs artificial)
  • depth of field - what is it and why use it?
  • the effect of lenses
  • responding to light – composition
  • using technique to order your environment – metering and focus points
    fill-in light

  • 9.30am         arrival & coffee
  • 10.00            session 1
  • 11.30            break
  • 11.45            session 2
  • 12.30            lunch
  • 1.30              session 3
  • 2.30              break
  • 2.45              session 4
  • 3.45              close

We'll spend some time going through the basics of exposure, camera operation and Q&A and then we'll be joined by a model in the afternoon. We'll be photographing both inside and outside, and if we have some rain then we will continue to shoot making use of whatever cover is available! Pack light - if you have a multi-purpose lens then great. If you have more than one lens then make sure one of them is suitable for portraits which means a minimum focal length (the number of the side of the lens or on the box it came in) of 50mm. If you have a flash gun please bring it and if you haven't got one that's ok too.
